A Wilder Experience (AWE) offers unique, adventure tourism-based excursions in some of the most remote areas of Canada. Whether it is a traditional whale & iceberg Zodiac tour or a multi-day ski or paddling expedition, we are here to help make your adventure a reality.

Meet Our Team

Rene Ritter (He/Him)Director/Lead Guide
René Ritter is the Director and founder of A Wilder Experience. He has extensive experience working in the field of outdoor experiential education, particularly as it pertains to wilderness medicine education and guiding. René is a certified river guide, swift water and ice rescue instructor and wilderness medic. He has mentored and worked with some of the world’s most accomplished polar guides in the world during his 11 years living on Baffin Island. René has completed several long-distance ski expeditions, including a crossing of Greenland and a Spring traverse of the Akshayuk Pass through the Baffin Mountains. René has trained search and rescue teams in various rescue fields in some of the most remote parts of Canada. His current project is a multi-year ski expedition following the famed Northwest Passage that is supported by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.
Laura Bass (She/Her)Operations Manager
Laura comes to Newfoundland all the way from her home of Northern BC to complete her Master’s degree and experience the beautiful adventure that the rock has to offer. She comes from a background of conservation and therapeutic recreation. Her current research is centered around nature-based mindfulness, pro-environmental attitudes, and barriers to access for those who identify as women. She is an avid movement generalist, yoga teacher, dog lover, nature lover, a self-professed bird nerd, and a laughter enthusiast. She loves following dirt roads, cooking plant based, camping with her dogs, being upside down, getting lost in the mountains and out on the water. She is excited to start with this AWEsome team and share her passion of helping people experience the connection and beauty that nature-based experiences have to offer.

Fun facts: Laura has driven/camped across Canada 3.5 times, her favourite colour is green, and she loves acroyoga and circus!

Jessica Spooner (She/Her)Guide
Jessica loves being outdoors and is a self-proclaimed renegade environmentalist. She has spent years educating others in Sustainability and currently teaches a college course on practical ways to lower your environmental impact. This work is driven by her passion to (re)connect others with themselves, each other, and the natural world.

Jessica is trained in adventure and eco-tourism, is a certified Forest Therapy guide, Eco Coach, and host of a fun podcast: Shine!
She is an outdoor enthusiast and spends most of her time on the trails and in the woods. She has guided women on multi-day backpacking excursions for over 5 years and is excited to bring this passion for the outdoors to her work on the water with AWE! She loves bossa nova with her pancakes on Sunday mornings, going on adventures with nothing but her pack, campfires on the beach, listening to podcasts, and spotting whales!
